Be well prepared for your trip

Traveling is incredible, but it is even better when you are prepared. Of course, you can also just go with the flow and see what will happen during your trip, but when you are traveling to another country there are some norms and rules that you might want to take into account. We have written down a few tips for your holiday to France.

  1. Each country has its own set of rules when it comes to transportation and the environment. France is no different. Are you traveling by car? You might need an environmental badge. You can get these here.
  2. Are you planning to go on hikes and walks? Then we highly recommend you to get a travel map from IGN France to discover some of the best walking routes. These maps are written with a lot of details. The tourist map has extra information on castles, caves, and other attractions on your route.
The Dordogne has some beautiful walking routes, for example. During your walk, you can visit local businesses to enjoy their regional products, such as walnuts, truffles, cheese, and wines.
  3. The French love to take their time for lunch and dinner. In the morning, however – when everyone is in a hurry – they will have a small and quick meal, such as a croissant. Are you planning on eating out a lot? Expect some extensive lunch and dinner menu’s, but a small breakfast menu. You can always get your own breakfast at the local bakery, which is something that we highly recommend: the French bread tastes amazing!
  4. The French kitchen is one of the most popular kitchens in the world, but besides that, most of our Gites have a great kitchen to enjoy some cooking yourself. In the supermarkets in France, you’ll often find everything you need, thanks to the separate departments, from lobster to liquor stores with local wines. But something that we also highly recommend you to visit the local markets in the villages.
Bourgogne is known for its delicious food and wines. Try a traditional ‘Boeuf Bourguignon’ during your holiday while following the authentic recipe, for example (or you can do a taste-test at a local restaurant first of course ;)).
