The house

  • Quiet, rural area

Guests have exclusive use of the entire farm at La Caltière, a stone farmhouse built in the 17th century and converted to offer plenty of comfort while keeping its original features.

Three bedrooms can sleep up to seven guests. Decorated in the traditional style, the house is on two floors incorporating a large open-plan minstrels' gallery. The home also features an 43 inch smart TV with freeview channels, as well as Wi-Fi internet.
The house is surrounded by a large fully fenced garden, with plenty of open lawn, some trees, and a seperately fenced 10m x 4m pool with underwater lighting.

The garden also has a boules pitch, and there is a table tennis table and some bikes in one of the outbuildings. The property is on a slight elevation, with views across the surrounding countryside. The other buildings within the farm grounds are an open barn, haybarn, and wine press /cellar.

The location is very rural and private on the edge of a hamlet of seven farmhouses.
On the ground floor, the living room is bright and airy with two stable doors. A stereo system and plenty of comfortable chairs make it a good place to relax.

In the dining room, there is an extendable dining table.

The kitchen is fully equipped and includes an electric oven and hob ,a microwave, a washing machine and a dishwasher.
The first of the three bedrooms is on the ground floor, and it has a double bed. Also on this level is a shower room with a toilet and washbasin.

A flight of steep wooden steps leads to the upper floor. The master bedroom is a family room with a double bed a single bed and another pull out single bed. It has an en-suite shower room with a toilet and washbasin. The other first floor bedroom has a pair of twin beds. The two rooms open off a large landing which serves as an additional living area.

La Caltière is set in the middle of a triangle of three villages: Azay-le-Ferron, which has a safari park, a château and a good restaurant, Martizay, and Preuilly-sur-Claise. All three villages have shops, a bakery and restaurants, but Preuilly is the largest, and is a very attractive traditional village. Built astride the River Claise, it has a famous abbey with a decorated spire, several restaurants, tennis courts and a supermarket.
La Caltière is surrounded by woods and arable land .
. The farm is in the Brenne National Park, known as the Land of a Thousand Lakes, which offers great days out, with walking trails and opportunities to watch birds and wildlife. There are good restaurants and several lakes with “beaches”in the Brenne park.

All the local villages and towns are worth visiting, especially on their weekly market day. The largest market is at Loches, and there is an evening market at La Roches Posay and at Loches. The major châteaux of the Loire Valley are within an hour`s drive, and there are other interesting towns to see on the way. The region enjoys a particularly warm climate from late June through to the end of September.

Spend two weeks in Chris and Fiona’s house. A beautiful place in a beautiful area! We have had marvelous weather, and had our daily breakfast under the cherry tree. The environment offers lovely little villages and its castles and the Brenne parc is a beautiful place for walking and cycling. Terry and Maureen are the kind and helpful keepers that are available and respond quickly when they are needed.

In short... We definitely recommend this place to any one who considers it. Oh and by the way... This place is much better than the pictures suggest!

Dear J , Thank you very much for your positive review. Very pleased that you had such a great time at the property and in the Brenne National Park region. Kind Regards Fiona and Chris

Restaurants, food & wine

There are restaurants in all the surrounding villages and our favourites change from time to time. Therefore there are full details at the house of our current recommendations. They are mostly "local" village restaurants with very reasonable prices and all offer a prix fixe lunch at a very low cost. There is a smart Michelin starred restaurant at Le Petit Pressigny , about 15 minutes away.

Activities

15 minutes away is the historic spa town of La Roche-Posay which has two golf courses, a casino, beauty parlours, shops, boutiques and a wide choice of restaurants, in addition to the famous water source which put it on the map.

  • Near hiking trails
  • Near riding
  • Near theme park
  • Fishing
  • Water sports
