The house

  • Quiet, built-up area with some traffic

An eclectic mix of old world meets new, Alice has the comforts of modern living with the ambiance of an era past. Centrally situated in a lively authentic French town, one has a true taste of the social French way of life! The entrance to the courtyard is shared with 2 other homes.

With 2 bedrooms and a generous sized living room, Alice can comfortably accommodate a family of 4. The living room has a TV & DVD machine - no cable! and a music device that works on Bluetooth. Free wifi is available.

Bedroom no. 1 has a sturdy bunk bed, bedroom no. 2 has a double bed of 160 x 200. The house is backed up into the hill under the light house for a very peaceful nights’ sleep.

Alice’s new kitchen has all of the usual amenities plus a blender, kitchen machine, scales, baking utilities etc. If you want to russle up a cake, no problem. With 8 of everything, you can invite additional guests for a meal. Note: no microwave.

Alice’s reminiscent 1970’s bathroom has a new shower with good water pressure and temperature. The bath is out of order and a make-over is scheduled for 2024. The WC is separate from the bathroom.

    Dear Leen,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a detailed review with compliments and things to be improved. We are super happy you noticed the care we took in furnishing and filling the kitchen cupboards: something we take great pleasure in!

My compliments for getting the hang of BOLD (bluetooth! not wifi - which can be unstable) Either people love it or they don't, but it is simply too convenient to do away with.

Thank you for the helpful tip about the cold kitchen on entering: we will now leave the shades open to have light and warmth even when the house is not in use.

I am glad that you brought up the activities in the courtyard. It is very difficult to find the right words for the advert description. Hopefully prospective guests will read your review and make an informed decision about whether or not to book Alice. We are so grateful for our kind and elderly neighbours. They have been very welcoming to both us and our guests, and I think they embody the social French way of living. Their grown up children visit them regularly and neighbours pop in for a chat (though most days it's very quiet). Social calls are never very late, no loud obnoxious music, never dissenting. On the other hand we also feel free to have a little party, laugh loudly, and children are welcome. On occasion we and our guests have received a gift of pickled seaweed or a plate of clams. Some guests even experience our neighbours presence as a charming extra and enjoy hearing a little ch'ti. I understand though, that it is not everyone's cup of tea, and I am sorry that it affected your trip in a negative way.
I have added to the general description - "Centrally situated in a lively authentic French town, one has a true taste of the social French way of life!" I hope this will help to avoid future disappointment.

Thank goodness, though, that you enjoyed the trip on the whole!

I came from the high desert of Santa Fe to the vast ocean in Ault. It was so beautiful! Alice, the house, is charming, comfortable, inviting, and very well furnished down to the last detail. The views, even from the house, are wonderful. A short walk up a little hill and the views are endless, 360 degrees. Or a short walk to the ocean, which changes color every hour. One can go in the ocean, or visit the nearby cafes with views of the chalk cliffs and ocean. Ault is so old and interesting, the buildings are wonderful and the shops are great. The people are friendly and not intrusive. There are many wonderful places to see nearby - a lift through the chalk cliffs to another high view over the ocean and nearby villages with lots of history were my favorites. All in all, it was just right for me and I wished I could have stayed longer. THANKS for making this wonderful place. It was all beautiful, charming, and easy.

Further remarks

Ault is a very authentic French town, lively year round and not too busy in the summer. A great swimming beach, at high tide the beach has pebbles and nice big waves, at low tide a smooth sea and sand.
