The house
A cosy and charmingly decorated 2-bed studio/gite under the beams, which you reach via a wooden staircase to the 1st floor. There are three rooms under the sloping roof with skylights; a sitting room, a kitchen/dining room and a bedroom/bathroom. The bathroom has a glass freestanding shower cubicle, as well as a bathtub on legs, from which you look at the stars through the skylight. There is a double bed and the furnishings are functionally simple. There is an electric cooker, fridge, microwave, Senseo, kettle. The terrace can be accessed via the shared entrance with gite Menadel.

Just south of the Morvan Regional Nature Park, the D680 winds from Autun to Le Creusot. 20 kilometres south of Autun, at 'La Pissoire' (the lake) is the turn-off to Saint Sernin du Bois and after three kilometres we are in front of the high gate with columns on which an 'ange' is depicted. Another 100 metres to go and it looks like we are arriving at 'a small Gallic village'. A wall 'en Pierre', another fence and several buildings with red roof tiles surround the courtyard, the central cour' lined with shady trees and shrubs: Bienvenue au Domaine Saint-Anges.
In the 18th century, this place was founded by monks who lived together in the large house 'Aladiah'. They lived off breeding animals (horses and cows) and for this they built the shelters that are now set up as 2- and 4-bed gites. All gites have been given the name of a guardian angel such as Menadel, Hahasiah and Omael.
Having parked the car, we walk past the sports field with goals and a volleyball net towards the entrance to the 'village' and let it sink in for a moment. What peace and quiet. Only the singing of birds and the rustling of the wind in the trees is what we hear.

Activities
In the forests surrounding the Domaine are many hiking, cycling and mountain biking routes. Just behind the Domaine, the GR 137 (a long-distance hiking trail of 52 km from Autun to Nolay) passes by. The waterfall (100 metres walk from the Domaine) is also worth a visit. About 1.5 kilometres away, on a lake, is the village of Saint Sernin du Bois. Here daily shopping can be done at the small supermarket, boulanger and boucher. There is also a post office and chef Laurent Bouthenet's Haute Cuisine Restaurant 'Du Chateau'. The lake is the region's drinking water supply. Lovely to walk there. Unfortunately, swimming and fishing are not allowed.
What is there to do in the region?
The nearest large city is Autun (19 km). Autun is a beautiful place with a rich history. Its medieval centre offers plenty of reason to spend an afternoon there. There is a Roman theatre and the town is completely walled in. The impressive 12th-century Saint-Lazare cathedral is famous for its tympanum The Last Judgement. The shopping promenade is car-free and there are quaint shops. On the square, you can enjoy the various cafes with sunny terraces. The golf course has 18 holes and there are great hiking and mountain biking routes to the Croix de Liberation, from where there are great views over the city and its surroundings. On a clear day, even Mont Blanc can be seen.
The Tourist Office has many tips and leaflets for excursions. It is worth mentioning that in the town of Le Creusot, 7.5 km from the Domaine, there is a TGV station. The train from Paris to Lyon stops there about every hour and a half. Cars can be hired through SIXT.
