The house
"La Châtaigne" the name of a beautiful old chestnut tree that has been next to the house for centuries. In October, the chestnuts are ripe, great for picking them and making French dishes like chestnut purée or roasting them in the fireplace (did you know that the Ardèche is famous for its chestnuts?).
In summer, enjoy the shade of this amazing tree with panoramic views over La Maza and the mountains.
La Châtaigne is part of the hamlet "La basse Maza", a centuries-old, unique hamlet that is now a small holiday park with a total of five holiday homes.
La Châtaigne is a rustic cottage with authentic elements, where it is lovely to stay.
Living room 5x5 with a cosy wood-burning stove, comfortable sitting area and cosy dining area.
Bedroom with hotel bed (2 x 80x200) with authentic French hanging cupboard with panel doors. In the bedroom you will find an authentic fireplace and a wall cupboard.
From the living room, an open staircase leads to the mezzanine with 2x single box-spring beds (80x200).
All beds are equipped with mattresses, pillows and single duvets.
A hallway leads to the kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with a 4-burner gas hob, stainless steel extractor fan, microwave/oven, fridge-freezer and kitchen inventory.
The bathroom has a shower, toilet and sink.
Large tiled terrace, partially walled, so you can enjoy complete privacy.
Adjacent to the terrace is an open area (exclusively for guests of La Châtaigne). On it, the famous old chestnut tree.
A second sun terrace (with complete privacy) with garden furniture and deckchairs.
For the youngest guests: cot, baby bath and high chair available (free of charge).
Free use of washing machine. This is for communal use and is located in a central room.

The house is part of a tiny ancient hamlet called La basse Maza and is now a small-scale holiday park in typical Ardèche style. Six cottages have been carefully restored in which the original character has been preserved but with all modern comforts. The cottages are cosy and comfortably furnished. All cottages are available as holiday homes (for other accommodations see www.lamaza.com). La basse Maza is picturesquely situated at ca. 500m altitude, in the Middle-Ardeche, in the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d'Ardèche. The area is very varied with a beautiful and often rugged mountain landscape where you will find many chestnut forests or slopes with wild blueberries, but also beautiful volcanic peaks and waterfalls. In contrast, there are also beautiful river valleys where a lot of fruit cultivation takes place.
From your cottage, you will have an extraordinary view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The good life in France can of course be found in a visit to one of the many restaurants in the villages around La Maza.
In Gluiras you can dine in the restaurant Le Sully located on the village square.
A haute cuisine with a hospitable entourage.
In St. Sauveur de Montagut there are several restaurants for everyone, from haute cuisine, the authentic French cuisine to a pizza are among the possibilities.
La Poste: a decent meal for a small price.
Le Marronnier: pizzeria where you can also dine besides pizza.
Pizzeria: pizzas and other menus.
Les Ollieres sits Le Siecle: a Routinier. A delicious meal for a small price. Also pizzeria.
Tips (and a voucher for a free aperitif) can be found in the house.
Activities
La basse Maza is ideally suited for people who love peace and quiet, nature, walking, etc. The surroundings offer many opportunities for excursions. The narrow and quiet country roads invite you to explore the area. You will pass through characteristic old villages, where time seems to have stood still. There are several museums, you can visit castles or one of the many caves. The information folder in each house offers a wide range of recreational possibilities.
Apart from the river, children will have a great time playing in the playground. There are also various other facilities on site, such as a jeu-de-boules court, canoeing and mountain biking. So there are various possibilities in terms of nature, culture and sports.
Walking
The surrounding area is a walker's paradise. In each house there is a folder with a number of described walks of about 1½ to 3 hours. Larger walks are available on request.
Swimming
The grounds of La basse Maza border the river Gluyère, a beautiful river, with many rock formations, with rapids, but also pools in which you can swim. You follow a mountain path downhill (descent about 10 minutes) through beautiful wooded terrain. Good physical condition and sturdy shoes with tread are required.
A swimming area is dammed in the river Gluyère, deep and shallow, during the summer months. There are nice sandy beaches and surveillance is present. Entry is free. You will find this "Plage de la Fontugne" about 1 km from St Sauveur de Montagut (towards St Pierreville). Les Ollieres also has swimming facilities in the river (the Eyrieux).
Tennis
Tennis courts are available for rent in St. Sauveur de Montagut and Les Ollieres, among others.

Outdoor sports (including canoe/kayak trips and water walks) are organised by Eyrieux Sport in Les Ollieres, www.eyrieuxsport.fr

Rent is per week-Saturday-Saturday, based on 4 persons, including:
* gas-electricity-water.
* tourist tax.
* Free firewood-stove/fireplace.
* Free use of shared washing machine (please supply your own washing powder).
* Baby cot and high chair are provided free of charge.
In consultation, outside the high season, a different arrival and departure day (changeover day) is negotiable.
Bed linen can be rented, 3-piece set (pillowcase, bottom sheet and fitted sheet, made on the bed for 10.00 eruro per person.
