The house
In the northern part of the Ardèche, our holiday home Rossignol (Nightingale) is located in the middle of nature. With four bedrooms, it is suitable for groups up to 10 people. In summer, the covered terrace is a fantastic outdoor living room. Directly along our property (75 metres from the house) runs the river "Le Doux". There is a shallow area where small children can play. And a deeper part for swimming.
Classification of the house:
Ground floor:
- Well equipped rustic kitchen with dining area, four burner cooker, electric oven and microwave. The kitchen is heated by a wood-burning stove. In the kitchen there is a wooden staircase to the upper floor.
- Next to the kitchen is the cave with fridge and dishwasher.
- Living room with authentic fireplace. Through a door you can go to the garden. The room has a dining table, 3 armchairs and a sofa. In the living room is a CD player.
- Large covered terrace with a table and chairs. This terrace can be used as an outdoor living room in the summer. Attached to this terrace is an outdoor bathroom with toilet, washbasin and shower, so that after swimming you can immediately take a shower.
First floor:
- On the first floor is a bathroom with bath/shower, washbasin and washing machine. Next to the bathroom is a separate toilet. Both can be reached via the landing.
- Three bedrooms (2 persons). One room has a double bed. The (new) beds in the other two bedrooms have box-spring mattresses and can be joined together or left apart.
- A fourth room is spacious and furnished with 4 single beds.
All rooms have electric heating.
There are sufficient blankets and pillows available. Tenants must bring their own bed and bath linen. Kitchen linen is provided (kitchen towels, tea towels, dishcloths etc.).

Rossignol is situated in the valley of the Gorges du Doux. These gorges are considered to be one of the most beautiful parts of the Northern Ardèche. Near Lamastre, the Parc Naturelle Régional des Monts d'Ardèche starts. This protected nature reserve consists of green gorges (Désaignes), high plains (St-Agrève and Nozières) and the high Alpine landscape around the mountains Mont Mézenc and Gerbier de Jonc. Sometimes with view to the Alps (St. Barthlemie, La Louvesc).
At 3 km distance lies Boucieu le Roi. This medieval village is a 'Village de Caractère' and therefore has a protected status. In the heart of the recently restored village is a medieval church, a modest shop with daily fresh bread and a café-restaurant. For the larger groceries you can go to Lamastre, which is 16 km away. Twenty km in the other direction is Tournon, an old medieval town with all amenities.

Restaurants, food & wine
During the summer, all kinds of cultural activities take place in the area. Check the websites of Tournon s/Rhône and Lamastre for the variety of concerts, exhibitions and festivals.
Tournon and its surroundings host several festivals during the summer. Every year in July there is the "Vochora" festival: polyphonic singing, both classical and jazz. The concerts are held in Tournon and in the surrounding towns. Usually, there is also a concert in the courtyard of the monastery in Boucieu le Roi.
For people with a reasonable command of the French language, the festivals "Shakespeare" and "Comedie" are also interesting. These are also organised in Tournon and Tain L'Hermitage.
Many villages in the area have their own annual festival with a market or brocante, music and dance. Some examples:
July: festival Médiévale in Désaignes with theatre performances, music and market in medieval style.
August: raspberry festival with brocante in Nozières
September: onion festival in Tournon
October: chestnut festival in Désaignes. With chestnut market, traditional products, brocante and music.
Places to visit:
- There are several farms in the area where local specialities are produced and where you can get guided tours. There are also a number of artists and craftsmen, who open their studios to visitors. See Lamastre
- In Lamastre, there is a traditional beer brewery, located in an old watermill
- Near Nozières is a farm where special cheese and fruit liqueur is made
- There are also several castles to visit in the area. A visit to Château de Crussol in Saint Péray is recommended.
- In Tain L'Hermitage there is a world famous chocolate producer "Valrhona". There is a Valrhona Boutique Chocolaterie on the N7 in Tain L'Hermitage, near the bridge over the Rhone.

Activities
Velorail: Instead, it is possible to ride on the railway tracks with the Velorail. This is similar to pedalos, but on a railway line. A 12 km stretch through the most beautiful part of the Gorge Du Doux. Departure at the station of Boucieu le Roi. The return journey in a 1938 "l'autorail".
Hiking: Along Rossignol there is a marked walk. This goes over the mountain at the back of the house and along the river to Boucieu le Roi. This is the Boucle du Cédron.
In Boucieu le Roi there is a walk with statues depicting the Christian passion story. This is the Parcours Pierre Vigne, which ends at the monastery located above Boucieu. The relief sculptures were made early last century. Pierre Vigne was a priest in the 18th century who founded the monastery in Boucieu le Roi.

Nature around Rossignol is of an overwhelming beauty: "Le Doux" meanders through green gorges. This results in a varied landscape: panoramic views and whimsical rock formations.
For walkers and cyclists it is a wonderful environment. Rossignol is situated 3 km from the medieval village Boucieu le Roi. In the village are a shop (bread, first necessities), a bar and a restaurant. Supermarkets are in Lamastre and Tournon (approx. 16 km).
Rossignol is easily accessible in all seasons. Approximately 1000 km from Utrecht, approx. 20 km from the motorway.

Wij (gezin met kinderen in de leeftijden van 3,6,9,12) zijn een week in Rossignol geweest.
Het huisje ligt heerlijk rustig. Overdag kwamen er een enkele wandelaar voorbij over het nabijgelegen wandelpad en af en toe komen de fietsen van de velorail achterlangs het huisje. De kinderen stonden op de uitkijk als de stoomtrein (2 keer per dag ) voorbij kwam. De afwezigheid van autoverkeer vonden we heerlijk.
Wij waren er in een week met vriendelijk weer. Tussen de 22 en 32 graden. De tuin/ het nabijgelegen veld stond volop in bloei en we hebben ons verbaasd over de grote hoeveelheid vlinders in het gebied.
'S nachts het raam open zetten kan zonder dat muggen je lek prikken.
We hadden niet alle kamers nodig. Onze jongste kon zonder problemen de trap op en af. De kinderen waren blij met de extra boeken, spellen en ander speelgoed die in het huisje aanwezig blijken te zijn. Sowieso is het huisje erg compleet qua uitrusting (tuinstoelen, kookgerei etc).
De overdekte buitenplaats is heerlijk schaduwrijk en een aangename plek om samen te eten.
De rivier is op de meeste plekken - met name bij de stroomversnellingen- niet zo diep en helemaal niet koud. Dat was voor ons ideaal, want ook de jongste kon spelen in het stromende water zonder dat we direct bezorgd hoefden te zijn over het ontbreken van een zwemdiploma.
Kortom, het huisje voldeed helemaal aan onze verwachtingen en was een van de mooiste plekjes waar we tot nu toe een vakantiehuisje hebben gehuurd.
We overwegen zeker om een keer terug te komen.
