Day trips from your holiday cottage

From your gite you can make day trips to charming towns such as Mortagne-sur-Perche, the old capitol of county Perche. Stroll through the old town gate and alleys to the square, the corn exchange, the garden at the town hall and the museum dedicated to philosopher Alain. Build against a hill is  medieval Domfront with a donjon, castle and half timbered houses.

Culture in the Orne

Lace making was an important industry in Argentan and in the department capital Alençon, situated on the river Sarthe. The fine arts museum has a permanent exhibition on lacemaking. Make sure to visit the 15th-century Notre Dame Church here. Or extent you trip with a visit to nearby Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei, one of the prettiest villages of France.

Famous horses from the Orne

In the oldest stud farm of France, Les Haras national du Pin, you can visit the stables  and on Thursdays from June to September famous breeds such as Percherion and English thoroughbred. International contests are held in July and September.

Your gite in nature

Orne has plenty of nature with two large regional nature parks Perche and Normandy-Maine which are ideal for walking, cycling, fishing and horse riding. Nearby is also Suisse Normande, the Switzerland of Normandy,  Fôret d’Ecouves near Le Bouillon and  Fôret de Bellême which is on the  UNESCO World heritage list.

Normandy specialities

Delicacies from Orne are for instance rillettes and boudin noir ( black pudding), Camembert cheese, Sablés Domfrontais biscuits, calvados and Normandy champagne poiré de Domfront made from pears. You will find local producers on the markets in Bangles de L’Orne from July to September.
