Nord-Pas-de-Calais

The two northern regions of France Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardie are joined now and have a new name: Hauts de France. Whats in the name? Nothing much changes and you still find lovely holiday homes and and a beautiful landscape.

The Nord-Pas-de-Calais, also known as the Opal Coast, is the most northern region in France. From the Cap Blanc-Nez you can enjoy beautiful scenery with vast green plains, chalk cliffs, dunes, beaches and marshes. Here you can find fossils, and in good weather see England. Enjoy your stay to browse the path along the unspoilt coast between Audresselles and Cap Gris Nez and cross the Grand Site des Deux Caps.

You can also do some of the great coastal hikes starting at Calais and passing through picturesque fishing villages like Wissant, Audresselles, Etaples-sur-Mer and Wimereux with its villas of the Belle Epoque. Discover one of the four Chemins de Mémoires and visit the monuments and bunkers from World War II and the Museum of the Atlantic Wall in Audinghen and the Museum ’39 -’45 in Ambleteuse. Here you can also visit a fort on the beach and browse the Dunes de la Slack. Further south, you can explore the seaside resort of Boulogne-sur-Mer with its port, its aquarium, its cathedral and its weekly market. And whilst you are in the area, do not miss Equihen-Plage, Hardelot-Plage and Le Touquet (Paris-Plage) with the natural reserve of Baie de la Canche. At Berck-sur-Mer, you can go sailing, attend the annual kiting competition or visit one of the oldest amusement parks in France: Bagatelle. This hilly region is perfectly suited for cycling, with more than 80 circuits through the Parcs Naturels d’Avesnois and Scarpe-Escaut. Culture lovers will not be disappointed either: The region has over 50 museums!

Take the time to visit the Palace of Fine Arts in Lille, the Museum of Roubaix in Art Deco style and the Braderie de l’Art. Arras with its abbey, its old center and its Christmas market, Cambrai with its cathedral and Bethune with its belfry are also worth a day trip. Come to celebrate Carnival in Dunkirk and enjoy the craft beer. The local cuisine has Belgian influences found on restaurant menus: dishes such as chicory or rabbit, but also “potjevleesch”, “fries with mussels” and “flamiches”, a torte with maroilles cheese .
