Burgundian delicacies and wine in Côte-d’Or

Dijon is famous for its mustard, spice cake and crème de cassis. This department capital has a lovely old city center, beautiful museums and a market hall designed by Eiffel. Take a walk along the copper owls in the pavement or make a trip on a Vélib (bicycle) from your holiday home. A wonderful casserole dish made with wine of the same name is boeuf bourguignon. Another delicacy from the vineyard is escargots, vineyard snails, which can be found on special snail farms. Also from Côte-d’Or is époisses cheese, an AOC product (“controlled designation of origin”), with a yellow-orange, red of brick red colour. World famous wines from Burgundy are for instance AOC Nuits-Saint-Georges and wines from the Beaune region. A sight in this fortified town is the 15th century Hôtel-Dieu, also called Hospices de Beaune, a hospital for the poor until 1971. The Roman church has medieval frescos and tapestries. Gastronomic capital of Burgundy since the 17th century has been Saulieu with events such as Journées Gourmandes and the Cajun-festival.
