The house

The property is a former paper mill originally built in 1688 which has been renovated into a home for the owners and 2 gites, Le Grand Cornet and Le Petit Raisin which are virtually identical. The gites share their own private driveway and car park (approx 10m x 8m). The gite has been renovated to provide modern facilities while at the same time retaining as much of the character as possible. All the rooms are newly furnished, spacious and comfortable. There is an upstairs with 3 bedrooms, sleeping 6 (2 doubles, 1 twin) and family bathroom. All the bedrooms have wall-mounted electric heaters and the bathroom has a heated towel rail. Downstairs is open plan with kitchen, dining area and a living area with a TV/DVD (English Freesat and French TNT) and a cosy wood-burning stove . There is a downstairs toilet and the gite has its own private patio (approx 6m x 5m) with dining table for 6. Guests are welcome to explore out 5 acres of grounds, including garden, woodland, orchard and streams. You can also feed the chickens and ducks and enjoy some free range eggs. Relax and enjoy the peace and quiet on our pool terrace, complete with 4m plunge pool and sunloungers. We also have a petanque pitch, trampoline, basketball and badminton net and also a few bikes which our guests are welcome to use free of charge.

Walking distance to the village of Saint Séverin which has a local SPAR supermarket, bar, bakery, pharmacy, bank with cash machine, Post Office and a newsagents. Just outside the village is an 18-hole crazy golf course and an outdoor recreation centre at Moulin de Poltrot with canoeing and tree-top zipwires. The hillside village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne 'one of the most beautiful villages in France' is a 15 minute drive away. It is well worth a visit for its famous monolithic church and a beautiful tree-lined square with cafes and restaurants and its river beach. A short 15 minute drive from the property is a 9 hole FFG golf course, set in peaceful countryside with its own bar/restaurant and tennis courts. The market towns of Riberac, Verteillac and Chalais are all within a 30 minutes drive. Brantome the 'Venice of Perigord' is a 50 minutes drive away and makes for an interesting day out. There is a Benedictine Abbey, excellent restaurants and bars and with a beautiful river running right through it. Nearby are the underground caves at Villars and Brantome Police Horses and Friends. The capital town of Angouleme is a 45 minutes drive away and has a wide range of shops and museums to visit. Just outside is Nautilus an indoor leisure centre with swimming pools and slides. Bergerac is an hour drive away, and the old town has narrow cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. You can take an hour long boat trip on an old 'gabarres' (flat bottomed boat). The Bordeaux, Bergerac and Cognac vineyards are all within a 90 minutes drive. Many vineyards offer tastings and the opportunity to buy first rate wines at the cellar door. In Cognac, Martell, Hennessy (includes a boat ride on the Charente river) and Remy Martin (includes a train ride tour around the estate) offer tours of their cellars/estates. Also well worth visiting is the pretty hilltop town of Saint-Emilion and Montbazillac.

We had a great week, Gary and Jo made us very welcome. The gites have been restored to a high standard, modern facilities combined with original architecture.

“If you could design a home away from home in France, this would be it.” These have been by far the best gites we have stayed in for size, comfort and cleanliness. There is no air conditioning, which on our first night caused a few problems, but on the second night we found that the shutters fit so well you can keep the windows wide open and still keep out the mosquitoes and moths and get some lovely cool night air in which is much healthier for you than aircon. All plugs are French and there is a washing machine and dishwasher in each gite along with gas cooker, fridge freezer and microwave.
The small village of Saint Severin is only a 15 min walk away and there are a couple of places to get cooked food and also a SPAR shop for purchasing essentials.
My two youngest spent hours trying to catch lizards in the back gardens, and my teenage daughter spent her time on the sun lounger connected to facebook and youtube on an excellent internet connection. Internet is assigned to each gite separately so there is no problem with data hogs next door.
If you come with extended family you can open the gate between the gites and keep the main gates closed so that younger children are safe and can move between both gites if needed.
There is also a large trampoline, and petanque pitch to keep the kids entertained, though you will need to stay with younger children as there is a lovely stream running through and near the trampoline.
I suspect that next year these newly built gites will be booked very quickly and I hope that I am one that manages to get a booking.

We stayed at Le Petit Raisin for 4 days and it was one of the most enjoyable stays ever. Great place, good locations near beautiful small town and a huge thank you to Jo and her husband for being such wonderful hosts. The fresh eggs from their chickens were a great treat. The house was very clean, extremely comfortable and well equipped with all the essentials you need for a relaxing weekend away in just outside Bordeaux. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing place to stay while in this beautiful countryside.
