The house

In 2007 we became the owners of a large house that formerly belonged to a Notaire (solicitor). Attached to the house is an office where he received clients. This office has now been converted to the holiday home ‘ Les Iviers’. The old filing cupboards in which records were kept are a reminder of the former function of the building, along with the Notaire’s safe – which now stands sentry by the front gate in the garden.
The gîte is cozy and comfortable and can accommodate two people. There is a lounge with a beautiful Scandinavian woodstove. The spacious kitchen (with a Smeg four burner stove, fridge and dishwasher) is well equipped, and opens out onto the terrace and garden. Garden furniture and a parasol are provided for your relaxation.
On the open plan first floor (accessible via a spiral staircase) is the bathroom (shower, toilet, washbasin) and the bedroom. The double bed has two firm mattresses 80 x 200. There is a step between the bedroom and bathroom.

The holiday home ‘Les Iviers’ is located in a small village opposite the church in the Thierache countryside - among fields, meadows and forests. The village lies in Picardy on the border of Champagne Ardennes. We’re about three and a half hours’ drive from Calais. The holiday home overlooks the church and rolling farmland. The Foret d'Aubenton is five minutes driving distance.
The absence of light pollution means on clear nights you can gaze at the stars.

Restaurants, food & wine

Good restaurants can be found in Aubenton (La table de Maya), Plomion (Le Huteau) and Vervins. In Plomion, you’ll also find Huclin wine merchants. In Vervins, every first Friday of the month(from 16.00 to 21.00) they have regional specialties. In Parfondeval Hugo serves traditional apple juice, cider and Pommel - all at the Clos de la fontaine, Maroilles is the most famous cheese of the region and in Reims you can pay the champagne cellars a visit.

Historically, the surrounding border region of Thierache long suffered marauding soldiers – especially during the 80 years war. In many villages, medieval churches took on dual roles - converted into fortresses where villagers could hole up. Today, there’s a route you can drive that takes you to see the most beautiful churches. There’s a large Dutch community in the area – and since the 1950s many artists, writers and journalists from the Netherlands have made their second home here. The nearby village of Jeantes has turned into something of a Dutch stronghold, and the fortified church there has been graced with some beautiful frescoes by Charles van Eyk.
Around Iviers you can enjoy walking and cycling. You can swim in a lake at Signy-le-Petit; and there’s horse riding nearby. There are also weekly bric a brac markets, where you can pick up a bargain. The most interesting and largest of these antique markets are held in Launois sur Vence, Maroilles and Guise. In Launois there is also an old staging post for the stagecoaches that carried passengers and the mail. The huge barns of Le Relais de Poste aux Chevaux et de Messageries Royales are the last of their kind. This old staging post on the route from Paris to Charleville Mezieres offers a chance to sample local specialties - and in the last weekend of September there is a flower bulb market, where Dutch traders ply their wares . Maroilles not only has a first class annual flea market but is also known for its cheese. The rather pronounced flavour is softened in the savoury Tarte au Maroilles which you’ll find in many of the restaurants of the area. Here, the garden of Sylvie Fontaine is also worth a visit. Nearby Guise is the town where the Goddess stove is manufactured.
Interesting cities in the area are Charleville-Mezires (birthplace of Rimbaud), Guise (Godin, Familistre), Reims (Cathedral and champagne) and Laon (with a cathedral and a beautiful medieval city centre). South of Laon, the Chemin des Dames recalls memories of the First World War, and is well worth a visit, just like the old vineyards, some of which have gardens that are open to the public. In Saint Quentin is the Musée Antoine Lcuyer with portraits in pastel by Maurice Quentin de la Tour. Even Paris (about two hours away) is within striking distance. But you can also enjoy peace and quiet sitting in the garden with a book ...
