EN LA MARRE is an early 19th century farmhouse and barns with swimming pool on a traditional Burgundian farming/wine estate of the Chateau de Dracy, in the commune of Dracy-les-Couches, a working wine village. The property is set amidst forests, meadows, lakes and streams in a tranquil rural location. The adjoining farmland has Charolais cattle with wild flowers, birds and wildlife in abundance all around.

The property has been converted into six self-contained, self-catering apartments, which are ideal for couples of all interests and lifestyles seeking independence with an extra touch of comfort. The apartments all have their own patios/terraces offering privacy with the option of socialising with the other guests if they so wish. They are set around a courtyard and a swimming pool, with open views over the countryside. The property was once the estate of French aristocrats who were spared during the French Revolution because of their popularity among the local villagers.

The current owners, Chris and Judith Mosedale, bought the property from the de Charette family in 1989, and converted it into apartments, retaining the stone walls, tiled roofs, and oak beams which give the property such character. The courtyard has a herb garden in the centre, which guests are encouraged to use for their own culinary creations.
All the buildings surrounding the courtyard are bedecked with colourful flowers, vines and herbaceous borders. Patios are also adorned with flowers. The courtyard opens onto the swimming pool and sun lounging area, offering a relaxing place in which to unwind and soak up the sun or cool down in the shade.
WE REGRET NONE OF THE APARTMENTS ARE SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN OF ANY AGE

Restaurants, food & wine

Chalon-sur-Saone (26 kms) has an excellent food market on Friday and Sunday mornings; Beaune (45 kms) and Autun (20 kms) also have food markets; Chagny (20 km) has a real country market on Sundays with a wide range of local produce.

Burgundy is well known for its rich cuisine, using heavy red wine in its sauces, combined with the robust Charollais beef to make "boeuf bourguignon", "oeufs en meurette" and other local specialties. The region also produces a great variety of cheeses.

There are many restaurants within easy access, including "La Tour Bajole" in Couches (4kms), "Au Petit Kir" in St. Leger-sur-Dheune",(6kms) Le Vendangerot" in Rully (15 kms) and "Pierre et Jean" in Chagny (20 kms), all serving exquisite food at modest prices. Just 5 minutes from EN LA MARRE is a campsite with a restaurant serving excellent pizzas as well as local specialities. Also very handy just for a drink amongst the locals.

The region is also well served with restaurants awarded two or three stars by Michelin, including "Le Jardin des Remparts" in Beaune, Lameloise" in Chagny, and "L'Hostellerie de Levernois", near Beaune. More restaurant information is available at EN LA MARRE.

The owners are very happy to make restaurant bookings on behalf of their guests.

Activities

Nearby are several golf courses: 9-hole in Autun and Chalon, 18-hole in Montchanin/Le Creusot and Chalon-Sur-Saone. There are several equestrian stables nearby, and trekking in the Morvan Forest.
Water sports are available on the lake in Autun, which has a sailing school and rents out pedalos, boats, windsurfing boards and mountain bikes. The Morvan regional park, which runs west and north of Autun as far as Avallon, is Burgundy's wilderness, with many locations for canoeing, fishing, climbing, and hiking. Rockclimbing is available nearby at Nolay (6 kms,) or for the less ambitious, plenty of hills and walking tracks for hiking. The canal paths are great for bike trips, equally for walking. Bicycles available on the property FREE OF CHARGE. The apartments contain comprehensive information on all aspects of local life and activities to make your stay as interesting and enjoyable as possible.

WHAT WE DO FOR OUR GUESTS
On arrival at EN LA MARRE all guest are invited to a welcome drink or two at 6 pm to meet other guests and be updated on local events, markets, general information etc.
Restaurant bookings gladly made, wine tasting recommendations or visits arranged. We hold a communal BBQ on Thursday evenings for those interested - each couple contributes a food dish and some wine, including your dear hosts; anyone with a talent such as singing, playing an instrument, story or poetry-telling etc is given an ideal opportunity on this occasion to entertain us all.

DRACY-LES-COUCHES is a working wine village with a friendly general store and bakery. The small historic country town of COUCHES has a medical centre with doctors, nurses, and pharmacy, two small supermarkets, restaurants, a bank with ATM and post office.
St LEGER-SUR-DHEUNE (6 kms) is slightly larger, with all basic amenities and a good supermarket. For more serious shopping, CHALON-SUR-SAONE (26 kms) has several hypermarkets to choose from, and a food market held in the medieval cathedral square on Friday and Sunday mornings.

Burgundy is a beautiful, varied region of rolling hills, forests, lakes, rivers and canals, and pretty flower-bedecked villages, but its most obvious attraction is its vineyards. EN LA MARRE is ideally situated for excursions to the Côte d'Or, to visit the famous wine villages of MEURSAULT, POMMARD, NUITS.ST. GEORGES, GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, as well as the Beaujolais area (FLEURIE, JULIENAS, POUILLEZ-FUISSE, and many more), just south of Macon.
For those interested in buying wines, the owners, both great wine lovers, can help and advise, offer recommendations and arrange wine tastings.

BEAUNE, the wine capital of Burgundy, is 45 kilometres away, with cobbled streets, art galleries, pavement cafés, restaurants and wine cellars. Beaune has a popular festival of baroque music running during the summer.
It's worth visiting the Château du Clos-Vougeot (15 kms north of Beaune,) to see the huge wine presses, originally installed by 13th century monks. DIJON (60 kms,) has many places of interest, including the Palais des Ducs, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and the market square, Les Halles, surrounded by restaurants and particularly interesting to visit on market days.

AUTUN, the former capital of Burgundy, has a vast Roman theatre and other important Roman remains. Cluny (40 kms), once the largest spiritual centre in Christendom, features a ruined Bénédictine abbey and the Musee d'Art et d'Archeologie. There are many châteaux in the area, the nearest being Château de Dracy in our village of Dracy-les-Couches, the Chateau de Cormatin, north of Cluny, with gardens containing one of the largest mazes in France, le Rochepot, a little chateau just before Beaune, and many others. For a change of scenery, take a drive into the Bresse, the flat plain east of Chalon, with its handsome brick barns and timbered farmhouses, then go on to the Jura, approximately another hour on from Chalon, with its unique food, wines and mountain scenery.

A perfect holiday.! A little bit of everything. A quiet country location and wonderful countryside to lose yourself in during the day. Wonderful villages to discover and at the end of the day a friendly comfortable place to call home. The accomodation is wonderfully rustic but at the same time has all comforts. The scene from our deck as I had my morning coffee is emblazened on my memory. Thanks Judith and Chris for the memorable evenings spent with you ,together with other guests, enjoying french wine and crreating culinery masterpieces! We wish we were a lot closer so could holiday with you often!
Our stay with you was a highlight of our 6 weeks in France. Thank you.

EXTRACT COPIED FROM HOUSE GUESTBOOK:

"Much enjoyed our first visit to "En La Marre", having come here on the recommendation of a friend (Imelda Jones) who has been 9 years in succession. Everything has been as promised, in fact our expectations have been exceeded in every respect. Our first week we spent in the very comfortable and perfectly equipped apt. "Aligote" and our second week in "Pinot Noir". The sheer beauty of the location and the fantastic swimming pool have meant that we have seldom left En La Marre to venture into the beautiful surrounding countryside, having been content to laze around the pool and chat to our hosts, Chris and Judith, whose fascinating tales have kept us entertained for hours on end. Thursday barbeques are not to be missed - a chance to meet other guests and to eat delicious food (and down a few glasses of wine!) in a convivial ambiance. Thanks to Chris and Judith for creating this oasis of peace and tranquility in the middle of the French countryside.

"Our 9th visit to Burgundy, En La Marre and Pinot Noir. Chagny market was great on Sundays, sitting at the cafe watching French life stroll by. The Thursday BBQ's were fantastic as usual - conversations from all parts of Europe. Yet again, many thanks to the ever-patient Chris and Judith for their magical holiday home"

We had a lovely stay in Chardonnay. Judith and Chris were very welcoming hosts and more than happy to help with anything. The apartment was big and light and very cool despite the heatwave. Everything we needed was provided including a great gas BBQ. The pool area was lovely. The surrounding country side was beautiful and lots of places to visit nearby. A very peaceful holiday.

PINOT NOIR:

"Just packing up after a fantastic two-week holiday here at "En La Marre". We've been out cycling every day, locally in all directions and along the canal and through the vineyards on the "voie verte" cycling routes - fantastic! The best part of the holiday has been the fun we've had bonding with the other guests and our hosts who have been up for evenings spent telling their life stories and enjoying the local vintages (perhaps a bit too much at times!) Having had many holidays in France, staying in gites, chambres d'hotes etc. we can honestly say we've never had more kind, generous, friendly hosts than Judith & Chris. they have been more like friends than hosts and have made our holiday. En La Marre is a beautiful, unique place and we wish we could stay longer, so we'll have to come back for more. Thank you a thousand times Judith and Chris.
