Holiday home in France
The holiday home has a peaceful setting in a quiet hamlet in northern Burgundy. Around the house is a child friendly, flat garden of 300m2 including a large lawn, orchard, two fenced ponds, a large trampoline and two wooden gazebos. The house has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large country kitchen, a cosy living room with French doors and a separate television room. There are terraces on both the north and south side of the house so you can always find a spot in either sun or shade. Built next to the house is a so called "Auvent" ; a covered terrace with built in stone barbecue. The area has several lovely villages with small scale and thus friendly and affordable restaurants, as well as several swimming locations. Nearby Chatillon-sur-Seine has a variety of supermarkets, shops and restaurants.

Rustic country house in northern Burgundy, 265 km south-east from Paris. Geographically the house is located on the division line between the 'colder' north of France and the 'warmer' south. Choosing this house means avoiding mass tourism in southern France while you benefit from the better climate, in a beautiful house and in a very authentic natural environment.
Layer-sur-Roche is a hamlet where only the church bell breaks the silence. From the house you can make various walks through forest and field while a short car ride will bring you to several swimming locations and restaurants in the neighbourhood. For example in nearby Riel-Les-Eaux or Lac de Marcenay you can swim for free in a natural lake with a sandy beach. In high season there is also a professional lifeguard present. Also in the spring of 2012 the completely renovated communal swimming pool of Chatillon-sur-Seine was opened. Alternatively, visit swimming paradise "Amphititre" in Montbard or the (smaller but very charming) community pool of Recey-sur-Ource.
Fun day trips can be made to, for example, Nigloland ( theme park), the Abbaye de Fontenay (World Heritage), the Abbaye de Val de Choue ( every day around 16 o'clock you can see the hunting dogs being fed), the town of Vezelay on the Pelgrims route, the Champagne region or the famous wine regions of the Cotes de Nuits and the Cotes de Beaune.

Restaurants, food & wine
Burgundy, and more specifically the Cote D'Or department, is known worldwide as a legendary wine region. Among connoisseurs, it is mainly the white Burgundies that enjoy world fame. These are made from the Chardonnay grape, where the Puligny-Montrachet is labeled as No. 1 white wine in the world. Much, however, depends on the quality of the winemaker because some Puligny's are of considerably less quality than the - lesser known - white Saint Aubins, Santenays or Chassage-Montrachets.
If you stay in the immediate vicinity of the house, you will find local winemakers who also make white wines from the Chardonnay grape. These wines are considerably cheaper than the earlier mentioned top wines but have a less complex taste and aftertaste. In terms of price / quality ratio, these wines can be very rewarding and you can buy a very decent bottle for around 5 euros. You can also buy the so-called "Cremant de Bourgogne" nearby, which is when "blind" tasted often indistinguishable from Champagne but is considerably more sympathetically priced.
In terms of restaurants, there are numerous attractive restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the house where you can eat well - especially at lunchtime - and find menus around 10 euros. A few kilometers away in Courban is the prestigious Chateau de Courban where you can dine gastronomically but also enjoy their extensive Wellness failures. Another gastronomic high light is "Le Sabot de Venus" at Bure-Les-Templiers while in a more modest class "Au Tournedos" in Chatillon-sur-Seine offers a decent 5-course lunch for only 13 euros from Mondays to Saturdays and thus delivers the very best value for money here in the region.
Layer-sur-Roche is located in National Park Champagne-Bourgogne so you won't find any industry or otherwise view polluting constructions. The area is ideal for wonderful walks through unspoiled forests and fields, along small streams and rivers. There is a golf course at 20 minutes by car, while horses can be rented in nearby villages. In the immediate vicinity there are several swimming pools as well as various Abbeys and historic towns.

JLG from Haarlem,
Comment from Kees Tiemstra
