The VAR has many old Provencal villages with narrow streets, old churches, fountains and picturesque squares, near Régusseyou you will find for instance Cotignac (the St Tropez of the Haut-Var), Tourtour (the village in the sky), Sillans with its famous water fall, Villecroze with its tropical park and caves, Moustiers Ste Marie with its pottery, the Valensole plateau with its lavender fields, Thoronet with its medieval abbey, Verignon, and its protected oak forest, Les Salles sur Verdon is one of the youngest towns of France, Quinson with its prehistoric museum (the largest in Europe) and many other attractions that contribute to the charm and beauty of this piece of paradise, known for its hospitality and joie de vivre, where a good place is surrounded by laughter and the Provencal accent.
In the region you will find vineyards, olive groves, fragrant lavender and beautiful mimosa
Lake St. Croix and the entrance of the Gorge Verdon are a 20 minute's drive.
The Verdon is a tributary of the Durance in southern France, in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region, on the border of the departments of Var and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. It springs at the Col llos in the Trois Evêches massif. It flows into the Durance at Vinon-sur-Verdon. Between Castellane and the bridge of Le Galetas the river runs through a deep gorge, the Gorges du Verdon.
The Gorges du Verdon is the largest gorge in Europe and second largest in the world, and is also called the Grand Canyon du Verdon, after the Grand Canyon in the United States. This park is a very popular area for nature lovers. Many climbers come to this area in order to test themselves on some steep walls of the gorge.
The Lac de St Croix is the second largest lake in France, located on the border of the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Var. It is also visible from a plane, if it is not cloudy. The lake has existed since 1973. The village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon was formerly on the site of the lake. There are still traces of it, such as asphalt roads that disappear in the lake. The old village was almost completely bulldozed and rebuilt 400 meters away. At Les Salles-sur-Verdon there is also an island at swimming distance. In t spring and autumn the water is so low that it can be reached by foot.
The lake also atrracts tourists. Especially near the entrance of the Gorges du Verdon are catamarans, canoes, kayaks, pedal boats and electric boats for rent for those who want to visit the gorge. Petrol engines are prohibited because of water pollution, odors and noise.
Larger towns in the area are Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Riez. Near the lake are: Les Salles-sur-Verdon, Bauduen, St Croix-du-Verdon. There are 2 bridges, Pont de Galetas, near the Verdon Gorges and Pont de St-Croix, near the dam.
