We are on the edge of the Gaillac vineyards and the vast Forest of Gresigne. Within 20 minutes drive your can visit 3 wonderful markets, the historic medieval hill-top towns of Cordes and Castelnau de Montmiral and the pretty town of St Antonin-Noble-Val, on the River Aveyron, where much of the film 'Charlotte Gray' was filmed. Albi and Montauban, the main big towns of the local region, are 40 minutes by car. Albi has recently classed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The track to our house is 1 km long, so we live in real peace and quiet. You can walk to the village of Vaour (2km), which has a 12th-century half-ruined Commanderie des Templiers, a Post Office, general shop & garage. There is a famous festival of humour and theatre held in Vaour for a week in early August : free street shows and open-air music, temporary big café in the square, places to eat etc. (9th - 14th August 2011).
We are 1 hour’s drive from Toulouse, a very interesting city with an attractive historic centre + international airport (Easy Jet & others). Other nearby airports are Rodez 1.5 hrs away and Carcassonne (2 hours).
Description
Interior
Our 'studio' gite consists of one large room (approx.6m x 4m) with exposed beams, on the first floor of a stone building which is next door to, but totally separate from, our own old stone farmhouse). The gite windows and terrace do not overlook us and you have your privacy. It is very sunny and airy.
The studio has a double bed (all sheets etc provided), armchairs, dining table with chairs, and a well-equipped en-suite kitchenette with fridge, 2 gas-ring hob, microwave oven, kettle, toaster, etc. Kitchen towels provided. Electric fan.
Terracotta tiled bathroom with big shower, WC, basin.
Exterior
The gite is reached by a wide wooden outside staircase leading to your own private wooden terrace (15m²) with loungers, table & chairs. There are stunning views in all directions, across the Forest of Gresigne to the Pyrenees and across farmland to the oak-studded plateau above St Antonin, the nearest market town.
We have a large garden which you are welcome to use, a vegetable garden and a 8m x 4m solar-heated swimming-pool, shared with us & our 2 teenagers (aged 17 & 19), but don't worry, we aren't in it all the time and they are often away! There is a barbecue below the gite.
Available: Washing machine, Iron, Bed-linen, Cot, High chair, Internet, Wireless Internet, Fireplace.
Activities
Wonderful walks, mountain-biking or other cycling, pot-holing, caneoing, : ”Green tourism” at its best. And not just in summer - it can be really beautiful here in the autumn (Sep-Oct) and in the Spring when the wildflowers are stunning (April, May, June).
Culture vultures can visit the cathedral and Toulouse Lautrec museum at Albi and you can easily visit Toulouse by train or car, it’s a great city. Lots of hilltop towns, castles, markets etc to visit.
Climate: Le Rial is at 425m so the weather can change quite quickly. It is warmer and sunnier than northern Europe. In July and August there can be refreshing and dramatic thunderstorms at night. In summer it can be very hot and very dry (although we can't guarantee this!) Average summer tempertaure is 25° to 33°C.
In spring there are beautiful and rare wild flowers, in autumn lots of wild mushrooms and chestnuts and the local people hunt deer and wild boar.
In the neighbourhood (max 30 minutes by car): swimming, golf, walking, mountain-biking, riding , water sports, tennis , Hang-gliding, para-gliding.
Restaurants, food & wine
There is a great choice of food and wine, much of it locally produced. In Vaour there is conserve producer (traiteur), someone raising Gascon pigs, a cheesemaker and an organic poultry farmer. We provide information when you arrive about markets, local shops etc.
Certain shops are shut on Monday, but you can get anything you need in the Sunday morning market in St Antonin (8.30 – 12.30h), where there are all the shops you need for every day .
There is a good selection of local restaurants within 20 minutes drive. Lots of opportunity to taste and buy excellent local Gaillac wine at the vineyards nearby. Big supermarkets in Gaillac.
Other remarks
This is rural France so the locals are quite traditional and courteous.
We already have a small dog, so we cannot accept other pets. the gite is no-smoking inside.
We very much look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to this beautiful part of France. If you are not English : we speak good French + some Italian and a very little German!
The rental price includes bed linen, (not bathroom or swimming towels), full use of washing machine (in owner’s house). There is a small heating charge in the low season. Please bring your own towels or rent for 5€ per person per week.
