Axat is small village community in the foothills of the Pyrenees. In Axat you will find one cafe/bar serving bar meals and one Auberge/Cave serving traditional homecooked fayre and promoting local wines. There is a small supermarket, a boulangerie, butchers, honeymaker, chemist, hairdressers and doctors all within a few metres of Echappee's front door. Axat also has a summer outdoor swimming pool, and the tourist train.

Interior
The gite at Echappee has been renovated to a high modern standard and is set in a traditional French town house, overlooking the River Aude with a backdrop of mountains. Combining the original features of fireplace and tiled floor, the apartment also has a modern American kitchen with cooker, small fridge/freezer, toaster and kettle and all utensils. A spacious area for dining and relaxing which includes a CD/Ipod player, a double bed with en-suite facilities including wc, washbasin and large shower. Echappee has an exchange library area where you can borrow books and admire local artists works. There is a seating area available outside that overlooks the river and local cafe and shops where you can delight in the smells and sounds of this vibrant village.
There are washing, drying and ironing facilities available for a small charge.
Echappee also offers cycle hire and cycle guiding.

Activities
In Axat there is a small modern and clean lido ideal for whiling away a day with full use of the exceptionally clean water and grounds where you can picnic or use the cafe. There is a famous tourist train where you can travel open air through the vineyards of the Route de Vin all the way to Rivesaltes. At the tourist information centre of Axat you can book for a wide variety of white water rafting. The area is popular with fisherman, walkers, birdwatchers, painters, cyclings, horseriders, cavers. The Mediterranean is approximately 1 hours drive where you will find beautiful unspoilt beaches, watersports and some excellent seafood restaurants. Also 1 hours drive from Axat is the world famous medieval city of Carcassonne which should not be missed.
In the neighbourhood (max 30 minutes by car): climbing, swimming, Skiing, golf, walking, mountain-biking, cycling, riding , water sports, Mountain climbing.
Description and distance to ski resort(s)
Winter skiing is available a short drive away. The nearest ski resort is Mijanes although this is a small rural ski station 20km from Echappee. 40km you will reach the larger ski stations of Formigueres and Les Angles. Another 10km brings you to Font Romeu. These are some of the most accessible and reasonably priced ski resorts in France.
Restaurants, food & wine
There are numerous caves locally where you are encouraged to taste the local wines which are some of the most famous and outstanding wines of the world and can be purchased for a very reasonable price.
The area is littered with restaurants from small family run auberges offering local produce and very reasonable prices right the way up to Michelin starred restaurants with eye-watering food and prices.
Other remarks
The price includes all bed linen, towels, electricity and heating. Towels will be changed weekly for two week durations.
A deposit of 25% is required to secure your booking and the balance is due 6 weeks prior to your arrival.
Arrival day is Saturday, but out of season we will try to be flexible.
