The house is situated on the border of the dominian forest of Fontainebleau and the regional Gâtinais Park of France. The gîte’s terrace faces south and has a expansive lawn in front which spreads out towards a wide sandy area with a strong wooded swing and slide. There is a dense set of bushes which separates the gîte’s terrace and that of our side. We live 2 km from the well-known bouldering area called the Dame Jouanne and the Elephant. These rocky areas are well appreciated by rock climbers from all over the world. There is a good-sized supermarket only 5 km away as well as a pharmacy, a post office, a baker and a bank. The larger cities of Nemours and Fontainebleau are about 15km away and they are both rather attractive cities. There are several kinds of stores, cinemas, and train stations in each with regular commuting to Paris. In the area there are several famous castles, such as the Imperial Castle of Fontainebleau, Vaux-le-Vicomte, mideval castle of Nemours, and others. EuroDisney is also easily accessible.

Description

Interior

Our house, designed by an American architect (the owner’s brother) was constructed in 1998. The house consists of two autonomous apartments which share a common main entrance. One side is occupied by us and the other is the gîte. Upon entering the gîte’s separate entrance, you will on your right 3 rooms: the first is the shower with a sink and a washing machine; the second is the toilet with a sink; and the last room is a bedroom with one queen-sized bed of 1.60m x 2.0m. As you continue straight along the large, windowed hallway you have a second bedroom on the right with two sets of bunk beds. Finally, at the end of the hallway, you arrive at the living/dining/ kitchenette area which has a huge set of bay windows looking out at th fields and the forest. You can often see squirrels and rabbits and many birds from these windows. In the kitchenette you find a microwave, dishwasher, a small refrigerator and a halogen heating range top for cooking. The living room area has two large sitting chairs and a sofa cozily arranged around a Danish wood-burning stove. The round dining table is placed next to the bay windows. The main space in the apartment also has geothermic floor heating which gives a constant, comfortable feeling that many visitors enjoy even walking around barefoot.

Activities

Escalade, otherwise known as bouldering or rock climbing, is a huge attraction in a large part of the Fontainebleau forest. There are rocks for all levels of climbers. There are many possible walks and hikes in the area some of which can be started directly from the gîte. There are also several horse clubs which offer balades on horse in the forest and because the trails are sandy it is possible to go on such walks all year round.

In the neighbourhood (max 30 minutes by car): climbing, swimming, golf, walking, mountain-biking, riding , water sports, tennis , Hang-gliding, para-gliding.
