The apartment is part of a renovated farm house - originally built in 1787 - with a total of four apartments (see our website: www. marpain-guesthouse.com for more details on the other apartments). A large garden of 600 m2, situated on the tranquil river l'Ognon (a tributary of the Saône), including garden furniture, is available to all residents of the four apartments.

Marpain lies at the crossroads of several villages and towns, such as Gray, Dole, Besançon and Dijon. One mile away is the town of Pesmes, an old fortress, which is one of the hundred "most beautiful villages of France", and has several small supermarkets, bakeries, a gas station, etc. as well as some restaurants. Every Wednesday there is a market where fruit, vegetables and cheese can be bought.

Interior

Marpain Guesthouse has four independent apartments that can accomodate 2 to 4 people, each with its own entrance.
Apartment 1 - The pictures belong this apartment - (60m 2) is situated in Marpain Guesthouse. It overlooks the river and consists of three rooms and a terrace. One bedroom with a double bed is located on the first floor, as well as a lounge with a fully-equipped kitchenette (with cooker, two hotplates and small oven), including a refrigerator and fireplace and a dining table with four chairs.The third room has two single beds. There is a balcony overlooking the garden and river. There is a separate shower and toilet. This apartment can accommodate 2 to 4 people.
A baby bed with sheets and blankets (10 euros) and a high chair are available. Extra bedding (with duvet and sheets) can be added (20 euros).
There is also a common room in the old "barn" where tea and coffee can be made. There are some board games, a modest library and a large table where you can have your meals with a large number of people. Our website contains more detailed information and pictures of all four apartments.

Activities

Marpain is located in the Jura and is part of the Franche-Comté. It has become increasingly popular as an area suitable for "green tourism." The river l'Ognon, next to which Marpain Guesthouse is located, offers the opportunity for swimming, rowing, canoeing and fishing (catfish, carp, pike and perch). At 150 meters is a small forest, which is very good for short walks, but a few miles away begins the forest of La Serre, which extends to about 16 km - more suitable for day trips (and one can also search for mushrooms during early autumn). There are also some lovely long and signposted walks in the surrounding area. It is also possible to explore the area by bike and visit the beautiful villages. There is a good riding school nearby for horse riding enthusiasts, where it is even possible to participate in a day trip on Sundays. During the winter season, about an hour and a half's drive away (Pontarlier) you can go skiing. In Pesmes, there are tennis courts that can be rented for 5 euros per hour. During the weekends (from early April to mid-November) there are many flea markets and "vide-greniers" in the surrounding villages and towns: a very nice way to explore the area.

In the neighbourhood (max 30 minutes by car): swimming, walking, mountain-biking, cycling, riding , water sports, tennis .

Restaurants, food & wine

Besides the Burgundian cuisine, the Jura has its own culinary products, such as the famous cheeses Morbier, Comte, and Cancoillotte.
In the regions of Dole, Besançon and Dijon, there are beautiful fruit and vegetable markets where the delicious, fresh products from the environment can be bought (with, of course, many species of mushrooms such as chanterelles in early autumn).
The great hubs of the Jura wine are the cities Poligny and Arbois, which are situated at about 50 km from the Guesthouse. There are also smaller vineyards in the area, such as le Moutherot (Doubs), Offlanges (Jura), Hugier and Motey-Besuche (Haute-Saone), which have organic wine These wine villages are only about 5-15 km from the Guesthouse. More to the north, there is the village of Champlitte, with simple but good wine. In September there is the "Foire des Vins", to make room for new wine later in the year: the best time to buy wine.

Week prices for the other 3 apartments: apartment 2 is a two-room apartment for two people (300 euros); apartment 3 is a studio apartment (280 euros) and apartment 4 is a larger two-room apartment with a small private garden (340 euros).
It isn't absolutely necessary to rent the apartment for a week or Saturday to Saturday: other starting days are possible in spring and autumn.

* The cleaning, linen and towel fee for two people (with rental of one week or longer) is 40 euros.
* Extra bed linen and towels for one person is 10 euros per week.
* A baby bed with sheets and blankets (10 euros) and a high chair are available.
* Extra bedding (with duvet and sheets) can be added (20 euros).
* The garden near the river can be used by all our guests
* Central heating is available inside all apartments
* All prices exclude costs of central heating during autumn, winter and spring
* Additional cleaning charges or dog 40 euros

Given that the guesthouse has four apartments that can accommodate about 10 to 12 people, it is possible to accommodate larger groups or families. It makes the whole house perfect for a family reunion, especially with the common room where you can eat all together and the enormous attic (200 m2) which is also available. Working groups are also welcome (for instance painting, food-and-wine clubs, as well as joint retreats, discussion and meditation groups). On request, we provide breakfast and / or evening meals. For a group of 6 to 8 people the price (including breakfast and 3 course meal + 1 / 4 liter wine) is 50 Euros per day; for a group of 9 to 12 people the price is (including breakfast and 3 course meal + 1 / 4 liter wine) 47.50 per day.

During the summer, we offer a "table d'hotes" on Thursday evening. The price per person for a 3 course menu + 1 / 4 litres of wine is 25 euros; for children under 10 years old we charge 12,50 euros.
